British International School - Casablanca

From August 1, 2020, to July 31, 2022, I served as the Head of Music at the British International School of Casablanca (BISC). My role involved directing a comprehensive music program across the school, encompassing general music education, class orchestras, string ensembles, and band classes. Within my first days at BISC, I transformed the music classroom into a vibrant workshop-style space that fostered hands-on learning and increased student engagement. This innovative environment was met with positive feedback from students, who thrived in the structured and creative approach to music education.

My responsibilities included introducing beginner wind instrument players to trumpets, clarinets, and saxophones, establishing a student jazz band, and forming a rock band that quickly added songs to its repertoire. I organized and provided musical direction for major school events, such as the Christmas concert and seasonal drama performances, elevating the standard of musical execution and showcasing students’ talents. Additionally, I implemented a program where every student actively participated in music-making, learning basic instrumental skills and collaborating in class orchestras.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, I adapted quickly by designing and launching an online music learning program, including the creation of a dedicated website to support students’ progress. This platform incorporated a balance of creative activities and formal instruction, ensuring continuity in music education despite the challenges of remote learning. I also authored a music theory textbook to supplement the learning experience and began preparing Year 9 students for the IGCSE Music course.

Through these initiatives, I instilled a culture of musical excellence and teamwork, encouraging students to explore their creative potential regardless of prior experience. My time at BISC was marked by resilience and innovation, as I navigated the challenges posed by the pandemic to maintain high standards of teaching and learning. Unfortunately, due to economic constraints related to the pandemic, my role as an expatriate teacher was discontinued, leading me to return to Berlin. However, my contributions at BISC were highly valued, and I left the school with a sense of accomplishment and growth in both my professional capabilities and the students’ musical achievements.
