Albert Gutzmann School - Berlin

From August 1, 2022, to July 31, 2024, I worked at Albert Gutzmann School in Berlin, a primary school and support center located in the socio-economically challenged Wedding district, where nearly 90% of students come from families with migration backgrounds and often have limited exposure to German at home. Having recently returned from Casablanca, I was grateful to quickly secure employment at this Berlin government school, which provided an opportunity to bring my international experience into a local educational context. The school, known for its cultural and sports focus in partnership with ALBA Berlin, is dedicated to fostering inclusion, tolerance, and mutual respect under the motto "Alle gemeinsam stark" ("Everyone strong together"). As a music and English teacher for Years 1 to 6, I tailored my teaching to meet the diverse needs of the student body, which included refugees and children from Turkish and other multicultural backgrounds. I introduced foundational music concepts to younger students through nursery rhymes, movement, and percussion instruments, while implementing an ensemble-based approach for older students, teaching them to play instruments such as xylophones, keyboards, bass guitars, guitars, drums, and vocals.
My arrangements of simplified popular songs enabled all students to collaborate as a band, nurturing creativity, confidence, and teamwork. I also worked closely with the school’s "newcomer" program, using music as a tool to support language acquisition and integration for newly arrived students with little or no German proficiency. Additionally, I coordinated musical performances that celebrated the cultural diversity of the school, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
To enhance my teaching practice, I participated in the school-organized "Das Trainingsraum-Programm und der Unterricht" professional development course, which provided strategies for managing behavior through self-reflection and accountability. This training helped me create a structured, respectful classroom environment that supported academic progress and personal growth, ensuring that every student could thrive in a multicultural and multilingual setting.
